ITEM:
D109 Although the blade
on this dagger is not the best with visible
grey areas, some minor scratching but also
with cross grain remaining, it is a fine and
rare early production dagger by Alcoso or
ACS. Fully brass based and a chocolate or
golden tone to all the fittings, the hand
fitted parts are well detailed and features
one of my favorite eagles to have been
designed during the period on a German Army
dagger by any maker, the rare over-sized ACS
2nd. This style of dagger, dating to around
1936 was in use for a short period only and
can occasionally be found manufactured with
an experimental iron base to the
fittings and fitted with either a slant or
type B grip. The blade on this dagger is a
tapered tang as it should be. The pommel is
the 14 leaf variety, flared and typical
Alcoso, the leaves are well detailed with
hand stippling applied to base background.
The original silver finish on all of the
fittings does show wear, but this has
resulted in a nice even mix of silver
and golden ( brass ) toning throughout. The
major plus point for this particular dagger
is the rarity of the configuration, they are
extremely hard to source. The scabbard is
dented to the lower third and missing the
twin side screws to the throat, but these
are available to purchase and can be
replaced. It has the early style Alcoso
scabbard bands manufactured in 1935, slim in
design and typical of ACS production, it
also shows the chocolate toning in keeping
with the rest of the dagger. Let down
slightly by the blade, this dagger still
remains a desirable piece, it displays very
well, attractive and complete with all
original fittings, this is another
configuration that is not easy to find in
any condition.
